Wells Fargo has raised its S&P 500 2026 target to 7,950 from 7,300, reflecting growing confidence in U.S. equities as geopolitical risks ease and corporate earnings expectations improve.

The revised target implies about 6% upside from the index’s current level of around 7,500 and places Wells Fargo among the more optimistic Wall Street firms forecasting further gains for the benchmark.

The bank attributed the higher S&P 500 forecast for 2026 to easing macroeconomic concerns, improving investor sentiment, resilient earnings growth, and expectations that interest-rate risks are largely priced into markets.

A key factor behind the upgrade is the interim peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which is expected to reduce geopolitical uncertainty and support the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Wells Fargo believes lower energy market risks could help ease inflationary pressures linked to oil prices.

The firm also noted that a recent market pullback helped reset investor sentiment, particularly in technology stocks

According to Wells Fargo, sentiment in the Nasdaq 100 has returned to neutral levels, creating room for additional gains in artificial intelligence-related equities.

Supporting the higher target is an improved earnings outlook. The bank raised its 2026 earnings-per-share forecast for the S&P 500 to $340 from $315 and increased its 2027 EPS estimate to $390 from $365, reflecting expectations for continued profit growth.

Separately, the Wells Fargo Investment Institute lifted its year-end 2026 S&P 500 target range to 7,800-8,000 from 7,400-7,600 and introduced a 2027 target range of 8,600-8,800.

Technology stocks expected to lead market gains

Wells Fargo remains bullish on technology and semiconductor stocks, citing continued AI infrastructure spending by major tech companies as a key growth driver.

The bank also sees upside in cyclical sectors as macroeconomic pressures ease and energy costs decline.

While inflation remains the main risk to equities, Wells Fargo said the threat would increase only if the Federal Reserve adopts a more aggressive rate-hike stance.

Despite the bullish outlook, the bank warned that risks remain, such as the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, which could increase market volatility, while potential regulatory scrutiny of artificial intelligence may weigh on a sector that has been a major driver of stock market gains over the past year.

Wells Fargo’s upgrade aligns with a broader trend of Wall Street firms raising their S&P 500 2026 targets.

For instance, Citi and Oppenheimer forecast 8,100, while Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank expect the index to reach 8,000.

Morgan Stanley projects a range of 7,800 to 8,000, while JPMorgan and HSBC remain more cautious with targets around 7,500.
