BlackRock doubles down on Bitcoin exposure with new BTC ETF

BlackRock doubles down on Bitcoin exposure with new BTC ETF
Paul L.

BlackRock is extending its footprint in cryptocurrency investing, filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT).

The new product is designed to offer limited upside participation in Bitcoin (BTC) price movements while providing a measure of downside protection.

The October 19, 2026, registration amendment outlines a strategy that seeks exposure to the performance of the firm’s flagship iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), or comparable Bitcoin reference assets, up to a specified cap while aiming to cushion losses.

Unlike spot products, the new fund would not hold Bitcoin or Bitcoin exchange-traded (ETFs) products directly. Instead, it would rely primarily on options linked to IBIT, typically structured across three overlapping tranches with staggered start dates roughly one month apart, each lasting about three months.

Each tranche would buy call options struck near 90% of the reference price at initiation, targeting an initial maximum loss exposure of around 10% before fees and expenses, while selling higher-strike calls to finance the positions and cap gains.

The fund would also hold cash, money-market instruments, and short-term fixed-income securities. Protection levels and caps may change and are not guaranteed, leaving investors exposed to losses exceeding the initial thresholds or even their entire investment.

Management fees, the listing exchange, and launch date remain undisclosed. Shares cannot be offered until the registration statement becomes effective.

BlackRock’s crypto products

The filing marks BlackRock’s third Bitcoin-related ETF application and builds on its expanding digital-asset business. IBIT, which began trading in January 2024, has become the largest spot Bitcoin ETF, with assets under management exceeding $65 billion in recent figures.

The firm also offers the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA), which holds several billion dollars in assets, and the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, launched in June 2026 under the ticker BITA.

Notably, BlackRock’s crypto-related ETF assets reached roughly $80 billion by the end of the third quarter of 2026, reflecting inflows and price appreciation in the underlying assets.

The new protection-focused fund would operate as a 1940 Act vehicle, distinguishing its structure from the grantor-trust format used by its primary spot products.

Buffered or defined-outcome Bitcoin strategies already exist, but BlackRock’s entry could carry particular weight given its distribution reach, the liquidity of IBIT options markets, and the scale of its existing crypto business.

The filing remains preliminary, and terms could change before the registration becomes effective; regulatory review will determine whether and when the fund becomes available to investors.
