BlackRock’s crypto portfolio up nearly $5 billion in July

BlackRock Inc. (NYSE: BLK) has seen its crypto portfolio surge by nearly $5 billion so far in July.

BlackRock’s crypto portfolio has increased by $4.8 billion, from $49.15 billion on July 1 to about $53.95 billion on July 28, according to data from Arkham Intelligence. During this period, the firm’s crypto holdings increased value by 9.77%.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) saw its value surge by $3.64 billion, from $44.69 billion on July 1 to approximately $48.33 billion. On the other hand, BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) registered an increase of $1.16 billion, from $4.46 billion on July 1 to $5.62 billion on Tuesday.

Why is BlackRock’s crypto portfolio up in July?

The gain in IBIT’s Bitcoin (BTC) holding was due to the asset’s uptick, since the trust net sold during this period. Notably, Bitcoin price has added $5,202, or 8.65%, in July, trading at roughly $65,330 at the time of publication.

However, BlackRock has reduced its BTC holdings by 3,420 coins, from 743,190 at the beginning of this month to 739,770 at the time of reporting.

This surge in ETHA’s value over the past few weeks was attributed to an Ethereum (ETH) price increase and renewed demand. Moreover, ETH price has increased by over 21% in July, trading at $1,952 at press time.

Additionally, the company purchased 105,920 ETH, up from 2.77 million on July 1 to 2.88 million on July 28.

Cryptocurrency capital rotation?

BlackRock’s crypto portfolio shift could be a signal that institutions are favoring ETH over Bitcoin amid increased global crypto regulatory clarity.

Already, the ETH/BTC chart has confirmed a market reversal after getting trapped in a month of falling trend, as Aksel Kibar, a former fund manager, explained. As such, ETH price stands to benefit more from renewed demand from BlackRock investors.
