IBM stock crashed 5% overnight; Here’s why

IBM stock crashed 5% overnight; Here's why

Late on October 21, International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE: IBM) stock whipsawed as it first rapidly rallied more than 7% before reversing just as fast and finding itself at $238.29 – 5.24% below the latest $251.46 close – in the Thursday, October 22, pre-market.

Curiously, the dramatic IBM share price moves were driven by the technology giant’s latest quarterly earnings.

Notably, the company disclosed a double beat, with revenue coming in at $17.10 billion – analysts were anticipating $16.82 billion – and earnings per share (EPS) at $2.95 – Wall Street was calling for $2.86.

IBM stock falls despite strong results and guidance

Additionally, sales overall rose 5% from the year before, and net income also rocketed in the same timeframe from $1.74 billion to $2.19 billion.

Simultaneously, IBM highlighted that its clients have started using ‘super intelligence’ (SI) – President Donald Trump’s term for artificial intelligence (AI) – ‘in ways that transform entire operating models’

Lastly, the company’s software sales were also strong and came in above the expected $7.66 billion, at $7.80 billion.

Looking ahead, IBM explained it anticipated continued sales growth of between 4% and 5% and a free-cash-flow increase of more than $1 billion. Reflecting on the whole-year revenue estimates of $32, the company’s leadership appeared to concur with the forecast.

Overall, the filing itself presented few clear reasons for the violent whipsaw and the relatively steep early morning decline.

Still, the phenomenon is not unheard of, and early 2026 featured multiple instances of big tech firms reporting strong results and then, nonetheless, plummeting, arguably due to underperforming the marketing narratives regarding the potential of AI.

Wall Street reacts to IBM’s latest earnings report

Finally, Wall Street’s reaction to the report proved significantly more positive than investors’. Four out of the five new ratings available by press time on the morning of October 22 featured ‘Buy’ recommendations for IBM equity.

The singular outlier – Morgan Stanley’s (NYSE: MS) Erik Woodring – opted to describe the stock as a ‘Hold’, though he increased his 112-month price target from $238 to $240.

Meanwhile, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Jefferies, and Citi (NYSE: C) all came out as equally – and highly – optimistic with $280 forecasts, and Barclays analyst Raimo Lenschow was close behind with an upgrade from $262 to $277.
