iPhones could be set to get a boost from Google's Gemini AI

Apple is in negotiations to integrate Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) engine inside the iPhone.

Apple has also lately initiated negotiations with Microsoft, launched a new tab-backed OpenAI, and contemplated utilising its methodology, according to a Bloomberg News report on Monday, March 18.

Notably, Apple is planning new capabilities for its next iPhone iOS 18 based on its own domestic AI models, but it is looking for a partner to power generative AI features such as image creation and essay writing based on basic prompts, according to the source.

Apple and Google yet to finalize details

Apparently, the two sides have yet to agree on the terms and branding of an AI accord, as well as how it would be implemented, and any arrangement is unlikely to be published until June, when Apple expects to conduct its annual Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple has been slower to introduce generative AI, which can produce human-like replies to textual instructions, than competitors Microsoft and Google, which are incorporating it into their products.

In February, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the business intends to divulge more about its ambitions to deploy generative AI later this year, and that the company is spending “significantly” in the field.

Apple and Google already have an agreement that allows Google to be the default search engine in Apple’s Safari web browser.

The deal, however, has been subject to regulatory scrutiny since the United States and its state allies claim Google illegally hindered competition by paying billions of dollars to Apple and other corporate partners to guarantee its search engine was the default on most phones and web browsers.
