Mt. Gox extends Bitcoin repayment deadline to this date in 2027

Mt. Gox extends Bitcoin repayment deadline to this date in 2027

Mt. Gox, a defunct Japanese Bitcoin (BTC) exchange, has extended its deadline for completing creditor repayments by another year, postponing it from October 31, 2026, to October 31, 2027.

Being the fourth consecutive annual extension in the platform’s effort to reimburse creditors following the cryptocurrency exchange’s collapse in 2014, the decision quickly caught the market’s attention.

Following a decision made with court permission, all the details were outlined in an October 16 notice published by the trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, which covered the proposed steps of the rehabilitation plan.

“As it is desirable to make the Repayments to such rehabilitation creditors to the extent reasonably practicable, the Rehabilitation Trustee, with the permission of the court, has changed the deadline for the Repayments from October 31, 2026 (Japan Standard Time) to October 31, 2027 (Japan Standard Time),” the notice read.

To put things into perspective, the original repayment deadline was October 31, 2023. The date was subsequently moved to October 31, 2024, then again to October 31, 2025, and then to October 31, 2026.

Mt. Gox still holds billions worth of Bitcoin, data shows

Judging by the notice, repayments have largely been completed for creditors who managed to fulfill the required procedures without encountering problems. At the same time, though, two groups remain unpaid, that is, those who have not completed the necessary steps and those whose payments were interrupted by processing issues.

Notably, the new deadline does not disclose the total amount still owed, nor does it identify all remaining assets or provide a roadmap for how future distributions might go. Instead, creditors seeking updates have been directed to the claims portal, but the trustee warned that a high volume of inquiries could further delay responses.

According to Arkham Intelligence data, Mt. Gox-linked wallets held approximately 34,387 BTC as of September 30, valued at around $2.88 billion at the time. This remaining Bitcoin naturally represents a potential source of selling pressure, as creditors could decide to liquidate some of their holdings once they’ve received their funds.

However, as the latest deadline extension has pushed the timeline further into the future, major concerns about additional supply entering the market in the near term have been assuaged. Moreover, the remaining holdings are also relatively small compared with Bitcoin’s overall market, meaning any price impact would depend on how much BTC is actually distributed.

Overall, the repeated extensions continue to highlight the administrative difficulties of resolving claims dating back more than a decade. For traders still waiting to be reimbursed, the key question remains not only when the remaining Bitcoin will be distributed but also whether those coins will ultimately reach the open market or not.
