GameStop (NYSE: GME) is an American company operating as a video game, consumer electronics, and gaming merchandise retailer. The company was founded in 1996 by James McCurry and Gary Kusin, with headquarters in Grapevine, Texas.

The company trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker GME, having gone public in 2002.  

GameStop sells video game hardware, physical and digital video game software, accessories, mobile, and consumer electronics products through its retail chains. The company operates its stores and e-commerce sites under the GameStop, EB Games, and Micromania brands; and collectibles stores under the Zing Pop Culture and ThinkGeek brand.

The firm also operates Game Informer, a print and digital video game publication that reviews new title releases, game tips, and news on the video game industry. The company’s operating segments consist of Video Game Brands segments that operate in the United States, Canada and Australia, and Europe.

In 2005, GameStop acquired EB Games for $1.44 billion, expanding its operations into Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

In October 2020, GameStop partnered with Microsoft to migrate backend systems to Microsoft 365 platforms, including Dynamics 365 and employees’ in-store usage of Microsoft Surface products.

In January 2021, GameStop shares surged 1,500% following a short squeeze over two weeks. On the New York Stock Exchange, the shares attained an all-time intraday high of $483.00 as of January 29, 2021.

The surge was mainly linked to a coordinated effort by the Reddit community under the r/wallstreetbets, a subreddit dedicated to stocks with high market risk.
