A Chinese Large Language Model (LLM) you probably never heard of could soon overtake the strongest version of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform ChatGPT by OpenAI.
It’s called KwaiYii, whose developers, a company called Kuaishou, claim it’s currently on par with ChatGPT 3.5.
The KwaiYii LLM has “significantly surpassed GPT-3.5 in overall performance … and is approaching the levels of GPT-4 in certain metrics”, said Cheng Yixiao, company founder and CEO, during its post-earnings call on Wednesday.

Kuaishou is a rapidly growing short-video platform, which claims that KwaiYii is approaching the capabilities of the most advanced publicly available LLM, GPT-4.
Kuaishou is confident that KwaiYii can match GPT-4 in the next six months, Cheng said.
The company also said that its KeTu text-to-image model has outperformed Midjourney V5, the AI image-generating service launched by San Francisco-based Midjourney a year ago.
Clash of the Titans
The landscape of artificial intelligence is undergoing a rapid transformation, and China’s leading technology companies are giving their Western peers a run for their money.
One of the fronts these tech giants are battling on is LLMs – powerful AI systems capable of generating realistic images, creating videos, and even writing code. The technology has the potential to significantly alter how we interact with tech in the future.
Tencent, the social media and video game giant, is a major player in this race.
Its LLM, Hunyuan, has already been integrated into various Tencent products, leading to increased efficiency and improved advertising strategies.
Hunyuan’s capabilities extend beyond user-facing applications, even assisting employees with daily tasks such as coding and content generation.
Kuaishou, on the other hand, isn’t simply developing KwaiYii for bragging rights. The company is actively utilizing the LLM to revolutionize customer service and empower users with innovative AI tools.
This could potentially allow users to create high-quality videos or generate creative content with minimal effort, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for content creation.
The AI race heats up
The recent launch of OpenAI’s video generation tool, Sora, has further intensified this AI race.
Kuaishou recognizes this as an opportunity to disrupt the short-video industry.
While it remains to be seen which company will ultimately emerge as the leader in this exciting field, one thing is certain: the advancements in AI tech promise a future brimming with possibilities.
