On October 28, 2020, reports emerged that Ericsson was selected as a key BT partner for 5G deployment in the UK capitals London, Edinburgh, Belfast, and Cardiff, and other major cities, managing around 50 percent of their total 5G traffic. BT and EE users would benefit from the Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) connectivity.

The partnership is set to be a major boost for the BT-Ericsson strategic partnership. Moreover, it adds to BT’s selection of Ericsson to offer the firm’s next-generation cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core earlier in 2020. The partnership made Ericsson the end-to-end 5G partner for BT.

After the deployment is completed, Ericsson is set to manage almost 50% of BT’s 5G traffic. The widespread partnership develops interesting opportunities for collaboration on the next generation of 5G products and services.

Ericsson’s RAN platform technology supports BT’s commitment to sustainability while simultaneously minimizing the company’s energy consumption and optimizing costs. It also offers an enhanced customer experience to BT’s mobile users. Philip Jansen, the CE at BT commented:

“Our customers deserve the best network and we are delivering. We’re the UK leader in 5G and are excited to be working with Ericsson as a key partner to maintain that market leadership. Through this deal, we will continue to drive the best mobile experiences for our customers.”

The super-fast speeds of 5G will enable users to grow their businesses, stream an increasing choice of content on their network, and keep in more sustainable touch with friends and colleagues from around the world.

Ericsson expands 5G into major UK cities

On his part, the President and CEO at Ericsson, Börje Ekholm, stated:

“BT has a clear direction in how it wants to drive its 5G ambitions in the UK; and we are delighted to be their partner in delivering that. Having already been selected to partner in 5G Core; we are pleased to strengthen the relationship further with this deal that will deliver high performance and secure 5G to their customers across the UK’s major cities.”

The company is demonstrating its technological leadership in population-dense and high traffic areas by deploying 5G connectivity in these critical locations.

Ekholm said that 5G will play a major role in meeting the United Kingdom’s digital ambitions. It will also help to accelerate the digitalization of the economy while stimulating next-generation wireless innovation targeting enterprises and consumers.

He concluded:

“With leading 5G technology, a robust supply chain capability, and more than 120 years of local presence in the UK; we’re committed to rolling out a reliable and secure 5G network alongside BT.”

Ericsson’s cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core network partnership with BT will see Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core getting deployed.
