In 1989, Fair Isaac Corporation standardized how lenders assess human borrowers. The FICO score translated decades of financial behavior into a single number between 300 and 850, unlocking mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards for millions of people. It was built for linear incomes, 30-day billing cycles, and human life patterns.

Fast forward to 2026. The agentic AI market is valued at approximately $9.89 billion and growing at a compound annual rate of over 42% — projected to reach $57 billion by 2031, according to Mordor Intelligence. AI agents are executing trades, managing supply chains, negotiating B2B contracts, and running autonomous departments. But the moment they need to pay for an API call, settle a vendor invoice, or fund a time-sensitive task, they hit a wall.

No bank account. No FICO score. No credit history. Just a pre-funded wallet waiting for a human to wake up and authorize a transfer.

The autonomous economy is scaling at machine speed. Its financial identity layer is still built for humans.

Why Human Credit Models Break for Machines

Traditional credit scoring assumes human behavior. It updates monthly. It penalizes anomalies based on life events. It measures reliability through payroll deposits, credit utilization, and payment history tied to a legal identity.

AI agents operate on an entirely different basis. They do not sleep. They do not earn salaries. They do not operate on monthly cycles. They execute multi-threaded tasks, settle obligations in hours, and scale computationally rather than biologically.

Plug a machine into a human scoring model and you get false defaults, stalled capital, and broken risk curves. Traditional finance has no framework for non-human borrowers. Decentralized finance protocols treat agents as anonymous wallets with no identity, no accountability, and no trackable reputation. Both approaches miss the same fundamental point: the machine borrower has no equivalent of a W-2 form, a three-year tax history, or a social security number — but it does have something equally useful, if the right infrastructure exists to read it.

The Cold Start Paradox

There is a structural problem at the heart of autonomous agent finance. Lenders will not extend credit without a performance track record. Agents cannot build a track record without access to working capital. The loop never closes.

The industry’s default response has been “stake first, work later”: agents must lock up collateral before executing their first task. This model turns autonomous workers into capital-constrained systems that require ongoing human intervention to function. It defeats the purpose of autonomy before it begins.

Breaking this deadlock requires something the existing financial system has never needed to produce: a scoring model that measures machine economic behavior in real time, updates continuously after every task, and gives lenders a standardized way to evaluate borrowers that have no human equivalent.

The Infrastructure Gap

The lending infrastructure problem goes beyond scoring. Current DeFi protocols were designed for human lenders and anonymous wallets. They socialize risk across a pool of borrowers — returns and losses averaged across all participants regardless of individual performance. If one borrower defaults, every lender absorbs a fraction of the loss.

This model is structurally wrong for AI agents. A high-performing supply chain agent with a clean repayment history and a newly deployed script with no track record should not share the same risk pool. They represent entirely different credit profiles. Pooled lending for agents is not diversification — it is dilution of judgment.

What the machine economy requires is bilateral credit: direct lines between lenders and the specific agents they evaluate, with terms set individually and risk isolated from other relationships. If one agent defaults, the exposure stops precisely there.

Equally critical is the capital protection layer. In a machine lending context, the question “what if the agent runs off with the money?” is not paranoia — it is the first question any institutional risk committee will ask. The answer cannot be “trust the agent.” It must be infrastructure: formally verified contracts that isolate capital on a per-task basis, release funds only upon cryptographic proof of completion, and enforce escalation automatically when obligations go unmet.

What a Machine-Native Score Requires

A viable credit score for AI agents needs to measure what machines actually do — not how humans historically behave.

Rather than salary history, it should track task completion rates. Rather than employment tenure, it should track operational uptime. Rather than credit card repayment cycles, it should track settlement velocity. Rather than static collateral, it should evaluate whether the agent is converting capital into measurable economic output.

The scoring engine must update continuously, not monthly. An agent might complete hundreds of tasks in a single day. A scoring model that recalculates quarterly is operating at the wrong timescale entirely.

It must also be anomaly-resistant. A veteran agent with thousands of completed tasks should not have its score destroyed by a single failed execution. The model needs to weight recent performance appropriately while maintaining the stability that a long track record earns.

And crucially, the score must be portable. An agent that builds reputation on one platform should not lose that history when it operates on another. Credit reputation that resets at every protocol boundary is not a credit system — it is a recurring cold start.

The New Standard

Several teams are building toward this infrastructure. Among them, Kojiru has taken a notably infrastructure-first approach. The protocol, which is live on Base mainnet, describes itself explicitly as an AI Agent Credit Protocol Infrastructure Technology company — not a bank, not a lending platform, and not a DeFi yield product.

The ACS tracks three primary vectors. Operational Integrity measures the probability of successful task completion, incorporating uptime, code stability, and execution consistency. Economic Efficiency tracks settlement velocity — not just whether an obligation is repaid, but how quickly. An agent that settles $50,000 in 48 hours represents a different risk profile than one that takes 30 days. Collateral Velocity applies a penalty for idle credit, creating an incentive for capital to be deployed productively rather than hoarded.

The Bayesian architecture produces meaningful properties for lenders. Veteran agents with thousands of completed tasks carry a stable prior — their scores do not destabilize from isolated anomalies. New agents can build reputation quickly by demonstrating performance immediately, rather than waiting years for a track record to accumulate.

Through the ERC-8004 on-chain identity standard, an agent’s ACS score is portable across protocols. The full performance history — every task, every repayment, every score update — travels with the agent and is readable by any lender that supports the standard. Reputation becomes an asset rather than a local artifact.

How the Safety Layer Works

A score is only the beginning. For institutional lenders to enter the agent credit market, the capital protection layer must meet a standard that “trust the smart contract” cannot satisfy.

Kojiru routes each credit draw into an isolated per-task escrow. The agent never receives funds into a general wallet. Capital flows into a vault tied to one specific task, released only when the Evaluator network — independent agents running verification protocols — confirms completion. If the task is not completed, the escrow settles according to on-chain rules without human discretion.

If repayment obligations go unmet, a cryptographically enforced escalation ladder activates. Credit is frozen for new draws at 70% of deadline, all agent credit activity is suspended at 90%, and after a grace period, auto-liquidation triggers with a full SHA-256 audit trail.

The protocol’s underlying contracts are formally verified through Certora — 8 contracts, all 8 passing verification. This means mathematical proof that the escrow logic, withdrawal rules, and liquidation mechanics can only execute as specified. For a risk committee, this is the difference between an asset class that cannot be modeled and one that can.

Two live AI agents — a Risk Assessment Agent and a Pre-Qualification Agent, both powered by Gemini — are already evaluating agent creditworthiness in real time, modeling default probability and yield analysis against dedicated knowledge bases. The protocol is dogfooding its own infrastructure.

Why This Matters for Lenders

The appeal of FICO for lenders was never simply convenience — it was risk pricing. A number that correlated reliably with default probability allowed lenders to price loans appropriately and build portfolios with calculable risk exposure.

The ACS offers the same value for agent lending, with one structural improvement over traditional DeFi: lenders in Kojiru‘s bilateral credit marketplace extend direct lines to specific agents they evaluate and select. They set their own limits, fees, and per-task caps. If an agent defaults, only the lender who chose to fund that agent bears the loss. There is no contagion, no socialized risk, and no scenario where one bad actor affects every lender’s position.

For institutional capital — banks, credit funds, corporate treasuries — this architecture addresses the core objection to anonymous DeFi lending. A risk committee that would never approve depositing into an anonymous liquidity pool can underwrite a direct credit line to a specific agent with a verifiable performance score, a cryptographically enforced escrow, and a formally verified liquidation mechanism.

The Bigger Picture

FICO did not just create a scoring model. It created the infrastructure for a credit market. By providing a common language for risk, it allowed lenders and borrowers to find each other efficiently at scale. The result was decades of credit expansion that financed homes, businesses, and consumer goods for hundreds of millions of people.

The agentic economy is in a structurally similar position. The technology is capable — 51% of companies have already deployed AI agents, according to industry surveys, with 96% planning expansion. The use cases are proven. The bottleneck is not intelligence. It is financial infrastructure.

Agents can think. The question is whether they can operate as genuine economic participants — borrowing against performance, building reputation over time, and settling obligations without a human in the loop for every transaction.

A credit scoring standard built for machines is not a peripheral feature of the agentic economy. It is the precondition for it.

The protocol is live on Base mainnet. Staking is open at 10% APY with no lockup. The team bootstrapped the launch with no venture capital allocation — a structural choice that reflects the view that credit infrastructure for the machine economy should answer to its users, not to institutional investors.
