Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos is set to make a major investment in Liverpool F.C. through a consortium reportedly close to completing a $1.82 billion deal for a 30% stake in the football club – a move that could net Bezos millions in the coming weeks.

As the math suggests, Liverpool is currently worth $6.07 billion, which would make it one of the largest football clubs in the world. In late May this year, Forbes valued it at $6.2 billion, which put it on spot number four in terms of value.

At the time, spot number three was occupied by Manchester United, which had a valuation of approximately $7.2 billion, meaning the Premier League rivals are roughly $1.13 billion apart, assuming Manchester’s value has remained unchanged in the past couple of months.

If Liverpool were to reach Manchester United’s valuation, a 30% stake would be worth about $2.16 billion. As mentioned, the same stake is now worth approximately $1.82 billion based on Liverpool’s current valuation. What that means is that the consortium’s 30% holding could gain around $338.6 million in value if Liverpool can overtake its rival.

How much would Jeff Bezos make if Liverpool overtakes Manchester United?

However, Bezos’s individual gain would depend on the precise share of the consortium he owns. Since the 30% stake is being acquired by a group of investors and not Bezos alone, the full $338.6 million increase would not go straight into his pocket.

Still, the potential upside highlights the scale of the investment. Bezos, who has an estimated fortune of around $274 billion according to Forbes, would be adding a major global sports asset to his portfolio, significantly increasing his net worth.

What’s more, the investment would also help bolster Amazon’s presence in football, especially given that the company has already made significant moves in the past, holding U.K. rights to 20 Premier League matches per season for six seasons and continuing to broadcast Champions League matches in several European markets.
