Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder and CEO, has encountered enormous challenges on his way to becoming the wealthiest person globally.
In the example of the Fire phone’s massive failure, it paved the way for the creation and great success of Alexa and Amazon’s Echo.
Whether succeeding or failing at levels never seen by many, Bezos says that the business decision-making process is a matter of the heart, as published in a recent Inc.com report.
Picks for you
Back in 2018, Bezos shared a humane philosophy to doing business that the media never portrays while speaking at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C.:
“All of my best decisions in business and life have been made with heart, intuition, guts… not analysis. If you can make a decision with analysis, you should do so. But it turns out in life that your most important decisions are always made with instinct, intuition, taste, heart.”
Although Bezos said that he uses mainly the heart to make business decisions, he says that leading with intuition, instinct, and the taste is quite hard to pull off without the heart orchestrating all of it.
The heart matters
While many tag the ‘heart’ to many negative associations in business, medical science has found a different conclusion than conventional thinking. Science has discovered that the heart and brain work closely together as an intelligent unit communicating with each other.
Seemingly, the heart is the boss of the brain, transmitting more signals to it than the reverse. In that context, a world-class brain surgeon and renowned author, Dr. James Doty, said:
“Rather than passively waiting for instructions to the brain, the heart not only thinks for itself, it sends signals to the rest of the body.”
Many are not aware that the heart influences human decisions, choices, and motivations. Thus, leaders should know that the heart can play an integral role in anyone’s success than the brain.
Follow the heart
People who follow their hearts seem to enjoy more career and life satisfaction according to a study by Medical Alert Buyers Guide.
Although not many people follow their hearts while making business decisions, it seems like not following it increases the risks of regrets later about the opportunities that got away.
Hence, if one wants to prosper in business, work, and enjoy a more satisfying life, they should listen to Bezos, the world’s richest person: follow your heart.
