Is the next iPhone getting an unbreakable display? What we know about iPhone 17's new tech

The upcoming iPhone 17 line from Apple is expected to incorporate a new generation of display cover glass. This novel glass promises quantifiable advancements in two key metrics: scratch resistance and light reflectance.

Potential benefits and fingerprint resistance considerations

According to the leaker Instant Digital on the Chinese social media platform, Weibo, Apple has invested heavily in new “coating equipment in Japan.” This new technology is expected to be implemented on the iPhone 17 series, potentially arriving too late for the iPhone 16 lineup.

On the other side, it is important to note that display clarity can be impacted by the oleophobic coating, a layer that repels fingerprint oils. While the current iteration lasts about two years, there are concerns that the new coating on the iPhone 17 models might show fingerprint smudges sooner.

Additionally, oleophobic coating replacements are not typically covered under warranty and can be expensive.

A look back at iPhone screen protection

A longstanding partnership exists between Apple and Corning for iPhone display protection. Apple utilizes a customized version of Corning’s Gorilla Glass, known as Ceramic Shield (introduced in 2020 with iPhone 12).

This collaboration extends beyond branding with Apple investing in Corning’s development. While Ceramic Shield boasts improved durability claims, independent verification, particularly regarding drop performance, is necessary.

Competitors like Samsung also utilize Corning’s Gorilla Glass technology, with offerings like Victus (reinforced with aluminum silicate) and Armor (promising superior scratch resistance) in their flagships.

Leaks suggest the iPhone 17 might utilize Gorilla Glass Armor, but official confirmation regarding the specific type of Gorilla Glass employed remains outstanding. This focus on collaborating with Corning reflects Apple’s continued pursuit of robust display protection for iPhones.
