Nintendo’s Switch 2 hits 9.2M units sold in just four months

Nintendo’s Switch 2 hits 9.2M units sold in just four months

Nintendo‘s Switch 2 sold an estimated 1.08 million units worldwide in September 2025, bringing lifetime sales to 9.24 million in just four months.

With the holiday season fast approaching, the battle between the PS5 and Switch 2 is set to define the console market’s next phase, while Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S risks being left further behind.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 led the market in September with 1.16 million units sold, lifting its lifetime sales to 80.25 million. The PS5 remains the generation’s dominant console, though its growth has slowed compared with the PS4 at the same stage.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 secured second place, selling 1,079,013 units in September to bring its lifetime total to 9.24 million after just four months on the market. In its fourth month on sale, the device has already sold 460,000 more units than the original Switch managed in June 2017, when it hit 622,621 units.

Despite a slight month-on-month dip of nearly 34,000 units, momentum remains strong heading into Q4. On a daily basis, the Switch 2 sold around 35,967 units in September on average, just behind the PS5’s 38,552, according to Finbold Research calculations based on VGChartz data.

Original Switch sales continue to decline

Elsewhere in the market, Nintendo’s original Switch continued its long tail with 311,009 units sold in September, bringing lifetime sales to 151.93 million units. Still, demand is fading rapidly, with sales down by 62.5% year-on-year, a decline of over half a million units.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S fared even worse, recording just 149,337 units in September. That figure represents a 49.3% drop from the same month in 2024 and leaves lifetime sales at 33.68 million. The comparison with the Xbox One in September 2018 underscores the platform’s struggles: the earlier console sold over 520,000 units that month, more than three times the Series X|S total.
