Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers NIO (NYSE: NIO), Li Auto (NASDAQ: LI), and XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) crushed July deliveries, reporting 65,604 deliveries combined.
That’s more than a 100% increase year-over-year.
Li delivered most vehicles while XPeng fewest
Li Auto delivered a record number of cars in July at 34,134, up from 10,422 deliveries in July of last year. Total deliveries this year amount to 173,251 cars. That’s a 145% increase from 70,825 delivered units during the same period last year.
Picks for you
XPeng delivered 11,008 cars in July for a total of 52,334 this year. For comparison, in July 2022 XPeng delivered 11,524 and 80,507 during the same period in 2022. That’s a 34% drop overall from last year. However, on July 26, XPeng and Volkswagen Group entered into a long-term strategic partnership, which seems to be keeping the stock price afloat.
NIO, on the other hand, reported a record for the company, delivering 20,462 units in July, up from 10,052 deliveries in July of 2022. Overall, NIO has delivered 75,023 units this year. For comparison, NIO delivered 60,879 cars during the same period in 2022, which is a 23% increase.
Is Tesla reign threatened?
Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is the second largest EV seller in China, selling 93,680 cars from its Shanghai factory in June. That’s more than Li, NIO, and XPeng deliveries combined during their record month of July.
That’s a sizable portion of China’s EV market, which saw the sale of 665,000 EVs and plug-in hybrids in June.
Tesla’s stock was down 0.5% in premarket trading, meaning the delivery numbers didn’t impact the stock price as much. Investors likely see the strong sales as a good signal for the Chinese EV market.
Tesla’s global reign seems priced in the stock market as well. The stock is up 147% year to date. For comparison, XPeng has returned 105% to investors during the same period, with Li trailing behind at 104%. Nio has had the lowest year-to-date return of 58%.
