This S&P 500 crash signal just made a major positive U-turn

This S&P 500 crash signal just made a major positive U-turn

The S&P 500 is showing signs of a broader recovery after a sharp deterioration in market breadth raised concerns about the sustainability of its rally earlier this month.

The latest rebound suggests buying interest is spreading beyond the handful of large technology companies that have supported the index.

In this line, the proportion of S&P 500 stocks trading above their 50-day moving average (MA) rose 5 percentage points on Friday to 61%, its highest level since mid-August. The reading has more than tripled since the October 1 intraday low, according to data shared by The Kobeissi Letter on October 24.

The recovery is also evident in longer-term trends where the share of S&P 500 stocks above their 200-day moving average rose 3 percentage points to 57%, its highest level since September 9.

The indicator has gained 17 percentage points in three weeks, ranking among the three sharpest improvements in the past three years.

S&P 500 crash warning

Notably, the rebound follows an early-October warning, when fewer than one-quarter of S&P 500 stocks traded above their 50-day moving average despite the index approaching record highs.

The divergence reflected narrow market leadership, with a handful of large companies supporting the benchmark while many stocks weakened.

Despite the improvement, the recovery remains stronger among large-cap stocks than across the broader US market.

Data from The Trading Tools showed that, on October 23, 58.3% of S&P 500 stocks traded above their 50-day moving average, compared with 33.4% of eligible US stocks overall. For the 200-day moving average, the respective figures were 55.9% and 38.2%.

Although the figures differ slightly, both datasets show improving participation among S&P 500 stocks, while the broader market remains weaker.

The S&P 500 has remained roughly unchanged over three weeks despite more constituents moving above key moving averages. On Thursday, 335 stocks closed higher even as the index fell 1.2%, highlighting the divergence between the benchmark and its constituents.

Implication of market breadth

Market breadth measures how widely a market move is shared. Because the S&P 500 is market-cap weighted, a handful of large companies can lift the index while others struggle.

Broader participation can provide a stronger foundation for further gains, although it does not guarantee an advance.

However, market breadth cannot independently predict a crash or rally. Renewed economic weakness, disappointing earnings or higher Treasury yields could reverse the improvement.

Meanwhile, the S&P 500 also faces technical resistance at its 50-day moving average near 7,703, while the October 1 low near 7,617 provides a key support level. The index fell more than 1% on Thursday, highlighting continued uncertainty over its next move.
