United Nations puts focus on AI, but not in a way you'd expect

The United Nations General Assembly just passed a resolution you might not have predicted.

Instead of panicking about artificial intelligence (AI) taking over the world, they’re looking at how AI can help us achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN wants AI to be used for good. They’re calling for safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems that address challenges like climate change, poverty, and inequality.

On March 21, the UN General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution outlining principles for the development and use of AI, according to their website.

This agreement establishes a framework for international cooperation on AI governance.

The resolution, proposed by the United States and co-sponsored by over 120 countries, prioritizes key principles for trustworthy AI.

Addressing the digital divide

Recognizing the uneven distribution of technological resources, the resolution emphasizes the need to bridge the digital divide.

This includes initiatives to boost digital literacy and equitable access to AI advancements for all nations.

Efforts to enhance digital literacy and promote equitable access were highlighted as crucial components of this initiative.

The resolution complements ongoing efforts within the UN, including initiatives by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), UNESCO, and the Human Rights Council.

It is also intended to inform future efforts, such as negotiations for a global digital compact and the work of the Secretary-General’s high-level advisory body on AI.

A foundation for a brighter AI future

The UN resolution and the European Parliament’s recent approval of the Artificial Intelligence Act reflect a global consensus on the need for responsible AI development.

Policymakers worldwide are working to ensure that AI benefits humanity while mitigating potential risks and safeguarding fundamental rights.

The resolution establishes a foundation for ensuring AI is developed and used responsibly, with the potential to benefit all of humanity.
