Brazil election shock sends this BlackRock stock crashing over 20%

Brazil election shock sends this BlackRock stock crashing over 20%

Nu Holdings (NYSE: NU) plunged more than 20% in premarket trading on Monday after Brazil’s presidential election delivered a surprise victory for incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, triggering a broad sell-off in Brazilian stocks.

The digital banking company’s shares fell to approximately $11.75, down 22.49% from Friday’s closing price of $15.16, as investors reassessed the outlook for Latin America’s largest economy.

The sell-off followed Lula’s victory over right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro, who had led the first round of voting on October 4.

Investors had largely anticipated a Bolsonaro win, expecting his administration to pursue tighter fiscal policies and reforms to improve Brazil’s economic outlook.

However, Lula secured 51.8% of the vote against Bolsonaro’s 48.2%, according to Brazil’s electoral authorities. Bolsonaro subsequently refused to concede, challenging the result.

Why NU investors were spooked

The sell-off appears to reflect heightened political and economic risks rather than a sudden deterioration in Nu Holdings’ underlying business. Its exposure to Brazilian consumers leaves it vulnerable to weaker economic growth, elevated borrowing costs and rising loan defaults, which could pressure demand and profitability.

However, the share-price decline alone does not signal weaker long-term prospects. Investors will need to assess upcoming results for signs of an impact on customer growth, lending and earnings.

Notably, Nu Holdings also accounted for 4.2% of BlackRock Latin American Investment Trust’s (LSE: BRLA) equity portfolio as of August 31, 2026. A sustained decline in Brazilian equities could therefore weigh on the trust’s portfolio value.

Nu Holdings was among several Brazilian companies hit by the unexpected election outcome as investors reduced exposure to the country’s financial markets.

Petrobras (NYSE: PBR), Itaú Unibanco (NYSE: ITUB) and Banco Bradesco (NYSE: BBD) also suffered steep premarket losses, while e-commerce giant MercadoLibre (NASDAQ: MELI) fell more than 10% in early trading.

The declines followed a rally in Brazilian assets ahead of the election. After Bolsonaro’s strong first-round performance, Brazil’s benchmark Bovespa index had gained nearly 7% through the end of the following week, while the Brazilian real strengthened almost 5% against the U.S. dollar.

Why Lula is negative for markets

Lula’s victory prompted investors to unwind positions tied to a potential political shift, reversing some of Brazil’s recent market gains.

The main concern is Brazil’s fiscal outlook, where public debt exceeds 82% of GDP, putting pressure on the government to curb borrowing while maintaining social programs and public investment.

Investors had expected Bolsonaro to pursue tighter spending controls and fiscal reforms, potentially paving the way for lower interest rates.

Lula’s reelection has raised doubts about fiscal consolidation, while higher borrowing costs and a weaker real could weigh on businesses and households.
