Crypto community in limbo after Joe Biden's 'Laser Eyes' campaign video

The current president of the United States Joe Biden is all-in with his presidential campaign for the 2024 elections, but so are the Bitcoin (BTC) maximalists with their accurate laser eyes spotting a curious detail in the most recent video posted on August 3 by the candidate.

“Joe Biden’s got laser-eyes on his coffee cup. Someone in the White House is a Bitcoin HODL agent.”

The above message was posted this morning by Bitcoin Archive on Twitter (now X), sharing the same video where the president of the US says: “I like my coffee dark”, as he shows a cup of coffee with the year 2024 on it, around a vectorized picture of Joe Biden with — what seems to be — a pair of laser eyes.

Laser eyes and Bitcoin maximalism

Back in 2021, some Bitcoin enthusiasts started changing their profile pictures on Twitter, adding a “laser eyes” effect. The most accepted meaning for this meme is showing the world they were bullish on Bitcoin’s price action, but also that they were laser-focused on BTC, ignoring other projects in the space.

The laser eyes became a sign of Bitcoin Maximalists. A group of investors that believe BTC is the only legit, and worthwhile cryptocurrency in existence.

Two well-known members of the ‘laser eyes tribe’ are Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador; and Michael Saylor the billionaire executive of MicroStrategy. Bukele recently removed his laser eyes, but Saylor is determined to keep his own.

Jason Lopp, has given a complete history lesson about Bitcoin maximalism in a blog post from March 22: “Maximalist attitudes tended to be more of a firm ‘no thanks’ when presented with worthless altcoin projects. Many of us found it offensive that some folks thought they’d be able to get rich quick from low-effort Bitcoin knock-offs.”

He defines the laser eyes as part of the “maximalist culture” that gathered strength and support during the pandemics, with “several other factors”, in Lopp’s words.

The Crypto Community now speculates if Joe Biden is signalling he is bullish on Bitcoin, if he wants to join the “laser eyes tribe”, or if this was just an honest coincidence.

However, Biden has never shown public support for Bitcoin. There is no evidence that the current president of the United States is a ‘pro-bitcoin’ character, nor that this video campaign is any sort of endorsement for the leading cryptocurrency.

Other 2024 candidates, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Ron DeSantis, are known for being supportive of Bitcoin.
