SpaceX reports $540 million Bitcoin loss

SpaceX reports $540 million Bitcoin loss

Although Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX) crushed Wall Street’s expectations in its debut quarter earnings report, SpaceX reported a loss of nearly $540 million on its Bitcoin (BTC) position.

SpaceX saw its Bitcoin trove record a loss of $539 million, from $1.637 billion on December 31, 2025, to $1.098 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2026, according to a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). As such, the company’s BTC value fell by 32.9% during the first half of 2026.

“As of June 30, 2026 and December 31, 2025, the Company also held 18,712 units of Bitcoin with a cost basis of $661 million and fair value of $1,098 million and $1,637 million, respectively,”  the filing noted.

Nonetheless, SpaceX closed the second quarter of 2026 with an all-time net unrealized profit of $437 million on its Bitcoin holding. As such, the company has reported a total profit of about 66.1% since it acquired BTC.

The notable decline in Bitcoin price during the first half of this year fueled the company’s digital assets losses. Furthermore, BTC price opened January trading at roughly $88,341 and closed June 30 at $58,533, or a decline of 33%.

SpaceX Bitcoin holdings outlook

Before SpaceX filed for its June IPO, the company had openly disclosed 8,285 BTC, which the company had held since it reduced its stake from 25,725 in late August.

As such, SpaceX ranked 8th in publicly traded Bitcoin treasury companies, based on data from BitcoinTreasuries. As of press time, the Elon Musk-led unicorn held more BTC than Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ: COIN), Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), and Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. (NASDAQ: DJT), which held 17,311 BTC, 11,509 BTC, and 9,542 BTC, respectively.

In the long haul, the SpaceX Bitcoin holding could impact the stock price outlook, especially bullish sentiment fueled by the mainstream adoption of the flagship crypto assets as a store of value.
